makeself.sh is a small shell script that generates a self-extractablecompressed tar archive from a directory. The resulting file appears as a shell script(many of those have a .run suffix), and can be launched as is. The archivewill then uncompress itself to a temporary directory and an optional arbitrarycommand will be executed (for example an installation script). This is prettysimilar to archives generated with WinZip Self-Extractor in the Windows world.Makeself archives also include checksums for integrity self-validation (CRCand/or MD5/SHA256 checksums).
Any subsequent arguments to the archive will be passed as additional arguments to the embedded command. You must explicitly use the -- special command-line construct before any such options to make sure that Makeself will not try to interpret them.
3) You can delete the files manually from within your Main() program. You must tell the code to wait for the install process to finish before doing this. There is a nice project on CodeProject which instructs you how to do this (it also tells you how to launch your program from the setup program but not appear until after the msi has finished): Go to and do the method in the message (towards the bottom of the screen) "Re: Proper Way to Do This [modified]" by dmbrider at 13:39 on 28 Sep '08. Simply add the following lines, substituting for the same as above after "lineinstallProc.WaitForExit();"
A self-extracting archive is extracted and stored on a disk when executed under an operating system that supports it. Many embedded self-extractors support a number of command line arguments, such as specifying the target location or selecting only specific files.
The procedure below shows how this can be done with WinZIP software from www.winzip.com. The only system requirement for this procedure is a copy of WinZIP Pro software or WinZIP Self-Extractor software. Admin privileges are not necessary but you may need the privilege to write to the "C:\Program Files" folder.
The premium options can be unlocked using this unlock code: EXTRCTSFX_App4hvhU1Aof. This software is now entirely free, but also entirely unsupported. No new versions will be released. -u "EXTRCTSFX_App4hvhU1Aof"Unlocks the program allowing the premium command-line options to be used. This sofware is now entirely free, but also unsupported. No new versions of the software will be released. The above unlock code can be used to unlock the (formerly) premium options.-autoExitIf the -run option is used to run an EXE after extracting, this option causes the self-extractor to exit immediately after starting the -run program.-nowaitIf this option is used, the self-extractor's dialog is non-modal while the -run EXE is running.-cfg See below-cp Use a specific code page for filenames. This is useful for non-Western-European filenames. Your EXE will self-extract correctly regardless of the locale of the computer where it runs.-d Creates an EXE that will unzip to a pre-defined, hard-coded absolute directory path. Environment variables delimited with "%" characters can be used, such as "%TEMP%" or "%PROGRAMFILES%".-dd Specifies the default unzip directory to appear in the main dialog.-ea "exe args"Used in combination with the -run option. This string is passed on the command line to the EXE that is run after extraction. Use double quotes to enclose the exe_args.-i Embeds a .ico file in the EXE that is created.-smSuppress the main dialog. The main dialog includes a progress bar, so if it is displayed, then no progress dialog is displayed.-spSuppress the progress dialog. A separate progress dialog is shown if the main dialog is suppressed.-fnShow the finish notifier dialog. Zip2Sfx combines the features of ZIP plugin for creation of self-extracting archives with the advantages of a command line application. Thus could be easily included in the batch scripts you use to create your installation software. Zip2Sfx is fully functional and standalone program and can be used without need of Altap Salamander and ZIP plugin.
Q: Can I use advanced self-extractor options like in the ZIP Plugin?A: Yes. You can specify all these options in the settings file, setting advanced options directly from command line is not possible. Use switch '-s' to tell which settings file to use. For details on settings file format see 'sample.set' file distributed with Zip2Sfx.
The archive you produce is executable and requires .NET Framework 2.0 or higher to run. Such frameworks are supplied with Windows Vista and above. You can execute it as a regular program by double click, or run it via the command-line interface. If you want to start extraction automatically specify -autoExtract command-line option. Sample:
either from the command prompt or your script. This will start the InstallShield installer in 'silent' mode, accepting all defaults and suppressing all prompts. You (or your script) will be responsible for performing any reboots which may be required.
With the optional command line utility, MakeSFX.exe, advanced authors can automate the creation of GUI self extractors via a batch file. Compatible FreeExtractor runs on all 32-bit versions of Windows (Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP). Advanced end-users havethe flexibility of extracting archive contents with third party programs like WinZip and WinRAR. Compact As tested, FreeExtractor produces the smallest self-extracting archives of any competing product, by up to 10kb. In addition, the FreeExtractor Wizard (used to create self extracting archives) is only 40kb in size - the smallest SFX generator for Windows we are aware of. What if you need to create a ZIP file to archive an entire directory? For example, you may have your own source_dir/ with the same three files as the example above. You can create a ZIP file from that directory by using the following command:

WinRAR offers a graphic interactive interface utilizing mouse and menus as well as the command line interface. WinRAR is easier to use than many other archivers with the inclusion of a special "Wizard" mode which allows instant access to the basic archiving functions through a simple question and answer procedure.

"Extract to folder\" Windows Explorer context menu command could fail to unpack ZIP archives if their names included a numeric part followed by .zip extension, arbitrary data was present before the first file record and "Remove redundant folders from extraction path" WinRAR option was switched on; 2b1af7f3a8
